Divorced - Beheaded - Died - Divorced - Beheaded - Survived!
On Friday night myself and friends/fellow Daily
Cosplaynet Writers went to Woking to the UK Tour of ‘Six The Musical’ at the
theatre. I wanted to share with you my thoughts on the show and give my
personal review below.
The six wives of Henry VIII take to the mic to tell
their musical tales remixing five hundred years of historical heartbreak into a
celebration of modern-day girl power. The Six ladies go from Tudor Queens to
Pop Princesses giving us a one of a kind girl band!
Musically it delivers clever hip hop rhymes, ballads,
R&B and more! Paired with dance routines and all delivered with a lot of
sass by a diverse and all female cast. I personally loved that the whole band playing
the music for the show are also all females. The musical singing talent is
insane. The vocals are brilliant, they all can sing so well on their own but also
work perfectly together. They could certainly outrun most modern-day girl bands
out there! Watch out Little Mix!
The show is staged as a very unsisterly
competition, each wife getting a song deliver to prove that they’re the biggest
victim, the one who suffered the most at Henry’s VIII’s hands. This is treated
weirdly as comedy though, very over the top and a lot of fun! All the wives
very much have their own characters and personalities that they show you through
their songs and banter.
Gabriella Slade’s sparkling costumes are out of
this world! They are the perfect cross between pop princesses on tour 2023 and
Tudor Court! They are a cosplayers dream!
At the very end, the women finally twig that competition doesn’t serve them, that it’s unfair they’ve been defined by a man, and that we don’t know anything else about them… I would have loved to see Marlow and Moss Offer an alternative ending giving the girls the chance to redefine themselves more.
It was very clear that the crowd absolutely loved
'Six'. When you’re not worrying about the plot/politics, there is much to
enjoy. There are moments that stray from the expected such as the song ‘Haus of
Holbein’, the reimagined Renaissance portrait painting as a dating app, to a
surreal mash-up of German oompah music and banging House.
I particularly enjoyed the X-rated jokes which were implied
either in music or were so subtle and understated there would be no way that kids
would understand them. Kids, however, would absolutely adore this show because
it’s literally six high-energy pop princesses on stage for 80 minutes.
This musical doesn’t fit the mould of what you expect from a musical. It feels more like a concert, a fun cross between the two. It doesn’t have an interval either just 80 minutes of continued musical fun. Its certainly unconventional.
This show is fun, uplifting,
it’s weird, quirky, unique. A very clever masterpiece! I’d highly
recommend this show.
